Leadership That Scales: How Great Leaders Build Businesses That Grow Themselves

November 18, 2025

Have you ever walked into a workplace where everyone is busy…
yet nothing is actually getting done?

Meetings are happening.
People are talking.
Tasks are being assigned.

But nothing is truly moving forward.

That’s what happens when there’s management
but no leadership.

It’s a lesson I learned early in my Air Force career, and it’s one that continues to shape every leader I coach today.

The Day Leadership Became Real for Me

Years ago, I was sitting in my office when a young Airman walked in and asked,
“Are you Sgt. Houston?”

I said, “Yes… what’s going on?”

He replied,
“I heard you give good advice.”

I’m thinking, Alright, where’s this going?

Then he said something I’ll never forget:

“I’m going to start coming to you for advice…
but I’ll probably only listen to about 50% of it.
Is that okay with you?”

I laughed and said,
“Sure — but what’s your name?”
Because I had no idea who this young man was…
but he already knew who I was.

He knew my voice.
He knew my example.
He knew my reputation.

And without me realizing it —
he was already following me.

That moment changed me, because I finally understood:

People may hear what you say…
but they follow who you are.

Leadership begins long before you ever hold a title.
Leadership begins with you.

That single truth carried me through every major chapter of my journey:

  • 20 years in the United States Air Force
  • Three graduate degrees
  • Teaching college for eight years
  • Leadership roles at Caesars Palace Corporate Office
  • Assistant Federal Security Director with TSA, leading 120+ people across eight airports
  • And ultimately…

Every step forward — every promotion, every opportunity — had one thing in common:

When you lead yourself well, everything else rises with you.

And that brings us to the three leadership lessons that will help you scale your business, your team, and your life.

Lesson One – Self-Leadership

“You can’t scale your business beyond your personal discipline.”

Real estate investors, business owners, and leaders tell me all the time:
“Chris, I feel like I’m running from fire to fire… I can’t get ahead.”

That’s usually a self-leadership issue, not a business issue.

Pain Point: Poor self-leadership is expensive.

It costs you:

  • Deals
  • Opportunities
  • Reputation
  • Focus
  • Money

Missed follow-up = lost revenue.
Disorganization = missed deadlines.
Poor focus = bad decisions.

Harvard Business Review reports that 92% of leaders fail NOT from lack of skill… but from lack of self-management.

When I took over my first large TSA team, I learned very quickly:

If I was scattered… my team was confused.
If I was late… standards dropped.
If I lacked discipline… they mirrored me.

Your team will never outperform your example.

John Maxwell said it best:

“You must lead yourself before you can lead others.”

Takeaway:

Self-discipline determines your destiny.

Lesson Two – Consistency

“Success doesn’t come from big moments — it comes from daily habits.”

Inconsistent leadership creates:

  • Inconsistent teams
  • Inconsistent results
  • Inconsistent profits

McKinsey found that consistent systems increase operational efficiency by 25%.

During my time leading airports in the Pacific, I had leaders who were great… sometimes.
But teams don’t follow “sometimes.”

Teams follow steady, predictable leadership.

So I created a leadership rhythm:

  • Weekly huddles
  • Regular check-ins
  • Clear expectations
  • Accountability

Productivity skyrocketed.

Real estate & business connection

Investors get paid based on consistency:

  • Consistent lead gen
  • Consistent walkthroughs
  • Consistent follow-up
  • Consistent contractor standards

If YOU are inconsistent…
your systems break, your deadlines slip, and your profits fall.

Jim Rohn said:

“Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practiced daily.”

Takeaway:

Consistency compounds results.

Lesson 3 – Influence

“People are the real ROI.”

Real estate is not a property business —
it’s a people business.

Relationships close deals.
Trust drives performance.
Influence creates momentum.

Poor leadership leads to:

  • High turnover
  • Contractor issues
  • Missed deadlines
  • Low trust
  • Low morale

And trust me — these cost more than any interest rate ever will.

When I served in Hawaii, I learned that my greatest leverage wasn’t my authority…
it was my ability to influence through service.

Once I invested in my people —
they delivered their best work without being pushed.

Gallup found that 70% of performance problems are tied directly to leadership quality.

Zig Ziglar said it perfectly:

“You don’t build a business — you build people. And people build the business.”

Takeaway:

Leadership happens at the speed of relationships.

Leadership That Scales

Here’s the truth I want you to carry with you:

  • Your business cannot grow beyond your leadership.
  • Your systems cannot outperform your consistency.
  • Your team cannot exceed the standard you set.

The best investment you will ever make…
is in the leader staring back at you.

If you want next year to be your best year —
you must grow the leader within you.
